Cats often eat grass because they don’t have the right enzymes to break down vegetables. It isn’t likely that your cat enjoys being sick, but when they are sick, it helps to remove any indigestible matter from their systems and it makes them feel better in general. On top of this, cats tend to eat their prey as it is, feathers, bones, fur and all so they throw up to get rid of some of the nastier bits of their meal.
Grass Juices
In a mother’s milk, there is folic acid. This same acid is in grass, and it is essential if you want your cat to be healthy as well as making sure that their body functions as normal. In fact, grass can also help your cat to produce haemoglobin and this is a protein that helps to move oxygen around in the blood. This is just one of the many reasons why cats choose to eat grass, but it is certainly an important one.
Nature’s Own Laxative
Another theory is that grass acts as a laxative. If your cat is suffering from indigestion then they may choose to eat grass in an attempt to get rid of the problem. After all, as a cat owner, you have probably seen your cat leave great big fur balls around the house. The main reason for this is because cats clean themselves and often end up swallowing their own fur, but when this fur gets into their digestive tract, they need some help to break it down. Your cat knows that grass can do this and that is why they choose to eat grass so they can feel better faster.
Sore Throats
As you can see, when you see your cat eating grass, you don’t have anything to worry about. In fact, some vets even believe that grass can be used to relieve a sore throat for your cat so if your kitty is a little under the weather, they are probably just trying to make themselves feel better.
Of course, some people actually choose to buy their cats portions of grass so they can keep them healthy when they need it and this is especially the case if you don’t have a garden and they are an indoor cat. If you see your cat eating grass a lot, then this isn’t a problem in itself, but it could mean that your cat isn’t feeling so good so keep an eye on them and get them checked out by the vet.
