10. They aren’t actually whales
Although we often call them killer whales (and are also known as orcas), they are the largest member of the dolphin family. They may resemble small whales in size and physicality, but their teeth place them firmly among dolphins. All dolphins and porpoises fall under the order of Cetacea, but the orca’s teeth classify them under the suborder Odontoceti, which makes them toothed whales. Orcas are classified as toothed whales because of their suborder, but they belong to the family of Delphinidae, which means ‘oceanic dolphins’.
