1. Captivity
In recent years, there has been quite a bit of media coverage on several orcas and their dreadful lives in captivity. Documentaries such as “Blackfish” detail the horrific circumstances, not only of their capture but their lives once they arrive at marine parks. As evidence of the immortality of keeping cetaceans in captivity, an orca’s lifespan typically drops to only around 29 years for a female and 17 for a male compared to up to 60 years in the wild. Most heartbreaking of all, they are separated from their pods and forced to live a life of isolation in facilities like these, which are inexcusably small compared to the ocean where they’re meant to live.
There have been several attacks on humans, with four leading to the person’s death. In short, orcas do not belong in captivity ever.
