10 Amazing Facts About Killer Whales

3. An evolving species

They are one of the only animals on Earth with the exception of humans that continuously change within a confined space. We know that orcas travel in pods. And these pods travel all over the world. If we think of them as small villages, where they stay within the confines of that village, they can only evolve so much. However, because there are so many different types and locations of orca villages, they actually evolve in tremendous ways that move the species forward as a whole.

This also has to do with genomes. Let’s break that down a bit more. In simple terms, genomes are a list of the type of DNA a species may have, and an orca’s evolution all takes place in its genome, based on where they live, what they eat, and their reproductive options. Their DNA will adapt to their conditions wherever they are on Earth.
