10 Amazing Facts About Killer Whales

2. Why killer whales?

How did orcas get the name killer whales if they’re really dolphins? In most scientific circles, no one really knows how they received that name, as no wild orca has ever attacked a human being.

However, orcas have been known to eat other orcas for sustenance, though that is quite infrequent. They do regularly eat other types of dolphins for food, however. It has been theorized that perhaps many years ago, early seafaring human beings saw orcas all the time, and noticed their voracious hunting habits. Regardless of how they received the name, it is still appropriate due to this powerful animal’s ability to take down large marine animals as prey. And orcas have certainly earned this unique nickname.
